In 1980, Hublot founder Carlo Crocco introduced not only his first watch but the core creative concept of his new company: fusion. Crocco’s initial design fused two never-before combined materials: gold and…rubber. Designed by boating enthusiast Crocco to emulate a ship’s porthole, the first Hublot watch’s gold case paired with a bold black band of natural rubber caused a stir, and started a company.
Today, nearly all Hublot straps are made of rubber, and fusion reigns as the mantra for its new creations.
So, given the company’s penchant for fusing what Mike Margolis, Hublot’s sales director USA, describes as “materials that don’t ordinarily go together, from ceramic to carbon fiber to titanium,” it is no surprise that the creation Hublot offers as a Robb Report Limited Edition is made of an amazing material.
Says Margolis, “The one-of-a-kind watch we’ve created is made from Cermet, which is a mixture of ceramic and metal. It is the hardest man-made material on earth.”
Called “Bat Bang,” Hublot’s Limited Edition watch hails from Hublot’s enormously successful Big Bang line created by the company’s brilliantly innovative CEO, Jean-Claude Biver.
As one might guess, the Bat Bang name does reference The Dark Knight. According to Margolis, “It has this cool carbon-fiber, cog-shaped figure on the dial. We are going to put on the outside of the cog the initials of the person buying the watch. That makes it a completely unique piece. Not only that, we have also never done any tourbillon in the Cermet case before. Plus we will offer the buyer the opportunity to come to our manufacture in Nyon, Switzerland, and install the six H-shaped bezel screws, to finish and seal his own watch himself.”
Just to tool Cermet to make the watch case is nearly impossible, according to Margolis, but, he says, “It is the extent to which Hublot will go to create a watch literally unlike any other in the world.”
