Hyped: iPod Touch VS Zune HD War Begins

ipodtouch-090909-2

If you haven’t been following tech news then let me quickly bring you up to speed on the ever growing touch screen craze that is taking over the technology world. Ever since Apple’s revolutionary capacitive touch iPhone and iPod Touch was introduced, there have been a slew of companies trying to get a piece of the Apple pie. An all out touch screen arms race has broken out ranging from the unknown upstarts all the way down to the usual suspects such as Microsoft, Sony, and Apple. However, it is hasn’t been easy taking on Apple’s very successful iPod line getting noticed in the portable music player space is becoming more difficult as the days go on. The only company that has a realistic chance of competing with the iPod Touch is Microsoft because of their marketing reach and almost endless cash support. News recently surfaced of Microsoft’s iPod Touch answer, the Zune HD, initiating another all out tech war between the two companies.

Apple has just announced that new iPod Touch models will be available for purchase today. The refreshed non camera having iPod Touch models are basically unchanged on the outside but add a boost of speed and power inside putting them on par with the iPhone 3GS-but without cameras. The 8 GB, 32 GB, and the newly added 64 GB models are priced at $199, $299, & $399 respectively. Although there are no dramatic changes in the the iPod Touch updates, this does even the playing field for a much anticipated Zune HD vs iPod Touch showdown. I personally believe that Apple’s iPod Touch has a huge advantage because their App Store, which contains over 75,000 applications, is very mature and robust. Microsoft’s lack of an App Store contender is an issue that they’re going to have to resolve if they plan on taking on the current PMP kings. It’s going to be very interesting to see how this all plays out, so I ask you will Microsoft be annihilated once again or will this turn into a head to head match up?

Also new iPod Nano models have been announced and they are also available today with an added camera for video recording, a microphone, speaker, pedometer, FM radio support, and Voice Over. The 8 GB Nano is priced at $149 and the 16 GB Nano is marked at $179.

Flickr Officially Comes to the iPhone

flickr_iphoneiPhone is the most popular camera on Flickr, butFlickrFlickr hasn’t really returned the love to iPhone users…until now. Because, you know, having your website optimized for the iPhone is one thing, and having a full fledged, native application for the platform is another.

The official Flickr iPhone app is finally here and it enables you to easily share the photos you’ve captured with iPhone’s camera, geo-tag them, and add them to sets.

You can also search for photos and videos (yes, Flickr also hosts videos, in case you forgot) from other users directly from your iPhone, comment on them or make them your favorites. In a word, it’s probably the best Flickr experience for the iPhone so far, beating all those unofficial Flickr apps we’ve seen.

Get the Flickr app for the iPhone for free in the App Store.

TECH – WWDC 2009 iPhone 3.0 App Roundup

We saw a parade of developers showing off fancy new iPhone 3.0 apps on stage today. Lets take a look at what was unveiled, shall we?

TomTom Turn-by-Turn Directions—Not only did TomTom announce an app for turn-by-turn directions, but they also announced an accessory for the iPhone that sticks to your windshield. It’s got a speaker and mic built in for the voice to tell you directions and you to talk to it to ask for directions while also enhancing the GPS signal. Coming this summer.

ScrollMotion’s Iceberg Book Store—This is a Kindle competitor that’ll offer over 1,000,000 books for download at launch, including textbooks by Houton Mifflin, Harcourt and McGraw Hill, as well as 50 magazines and 170 daily newspapers.

AirStrip—Get excited, doctors! This app lets you stream a patients EKG over 3G, which is downright nuts. You can also zoom in and replay “cardiac events,” which are the kind of events you never want to have.

Star Defense—From ngmoco, it’s a tower defense game that looks a lot like Super Mario Galaxy. It’s available right now for $5.99. Here’s Kotaku’s review of it.

Pasco—This is an app for doing science experiments.

ZipCar—The ZipCar app lets you find nearby ZipCar lots, see what cars are available there and make reservations. Even cooler? Once you book your car, you can unlock it using your iPhone. Pretty awesome. More at Jalopnik.

Line 6—This app lets you plug in your guitar and change its sound as if it was plugged into different amps. You can make an electric sound acoustic, design your own guitar based on pickups, pickup configuration, body type and other factors, or make it sound tuned all on the iPhone.
