iPhone 3GS Hands On

I just saw the new iPhone. There’s a reason its the same hardware design. It’s derivative of the first 3G and evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but there’s still a lot to love. I’ll keep updating in real time.

The device is faster, but of course, you can’t tell how fast it really is until you a) install a bazillion apps on it b) and have it sitting in your pocket for awhile over a few months as the system degrades to the point where you have to restore it. I asked how much faster the processor and RAM situation were, but Apple said they don’t like to focus on that part of the equation. They just refer to it as “magic”. I was told there was 2x the magic, so I’m going to guess it has 2X the RAM.

The Compass
The compass is incredibly cool. There’s a stand alone app that can be set to magnetic or true north. But its real power comes out when you use it with maps (there’s a button that brings you right to map.) Ever get lost and use the iPhone to find out where you are? Sure, we all have. Know what I mean when I say I hate walking a block and then figuring out I was going the wrong way? Me too. This eliminates that. By clicking on the locate me icon a second time, it shows your blue dot on the screen with a cone of perspective, indicating which way you’re looking. You calibrate the compass, before all that, by twisting a figure 8 in the air with the phone.
