AT&T begins rolling out MMS for the iPhone

AT&T Mobility LLCImage via Wikipedia

by Greg Kumparak on September 13, 2009

A few hours ago, we got a tip from one of our readers that they’d popped into their iPhone messaging app this morning, only to find that they’d suddenly gained the ability to send MMS. We chalked it up as a fluke – AT&T promised it would launch on September 25th, after all, and they haven’t exactly been punctual about this whole thing thus far. Two whole weeks early? It seemed shaky.

Then a few hours later, we got another one. So far, we’ve received three tips, all from entirely different people, all claiming that MMS has sprung up on their iPhones sans jailbreak or any other sort of hackery. Being the curious folks we are, we popped over to Twitter, and sure enough: there’s a stream (albeit a very slow one) of folks reporting that MMS is now up and running on their handsets. Enabling MMS on AT&T’s end is a matter of disabling an “opt-out” toggle on each account, so this is the exact manner we’d expect things to roll out.

We’ve contacted AT&T for comment, and we’ll report back with whatever we hear. Any more of our readers finding themselves MMS’d this morning?

[Thanks David, Bethany, and Sean]

Reports are showing up online that AT&T is beginning a slow rollout of official MMS functionality to seemingly random iPhone users, from Manhattan to Idaho. The official start date is September 25, but it makes sense that the company would implement the change gradually to make sure the network can handle it.

Mediaite’s Ash Kalb discovered that his iPhone suddenly had MMS after a recent upgrade, and theorizes that AT&T is slowly removing the MMS opt-out codes on iPhone users’ accounts.

Palm Pixi Now Official, Coming to Sprint For the Holidays

Sprint NextelImage via Wikipedia

September 9th, 2009 | by Stan Schroeder0 Comments

palm_pixiThe other webOS phone from Palm, the oft rumored Palm Pixi (originally spelled Pixie), has been officially announced, and it’s coming to Sprint “in time for the holidays.”

The device is the thinnest phone Palm has ever produced. Like the Pre, it also has a full QWERTY keyboard, but in a candy bar body. Other specifications include 8GB of onboard storage, a 2 megapixel camera equipped with flash, a 2.63 inch capacitive display with a 320×400 pixel resolution, and…no WiFi.

It’ll also come in many different colors and designs as part of something called the Palm Pixi Artist Series, which will offer a selection of limited-edition back covers for the device. As far as price goes, since Pixi is Pre’s younger brother, it’ll probably be lower than $149.99 which is how much Sprint is currently asking for the Pre.

Flickr Officially Comes to the iPhone

flickr_iphoneiPhone is the most popular camera on Flickr, butFlickrFlickr hasn’t really returned the love to iPhone users…until now. Because, you know, having your website optimized for the iPhone is one thing, and having a full fledged, native application for the platform is another.

The official Flickr iPhone app is finally here and it enables you to easily share the photos you’ve captured with iPhone’s camera, geo-tag them, and add them to sets.

You can also search for photos and videos (yes, Flickr also hosts videos, in case you forgot) from other users directly from your iPhone, comment on them or make them your favorites. In a word, it’s probably the best Flickr experience for the iPhone so far, beating all those unofficial Flickr apps we’ve seen.

Get the Flickr app for the iPhone for free in the App Store.
